The Automated Slips (AS) eliminates the manual handling of slips and slip inserts on the working floor, boosting safety and efficiency.
The AS automatically handles tubulars from 3 1/2″ to 20″ (the maximum passageway is 23″), thereby taking care of most drilling and casing running operations needed to complete a well.
The AS has a hardened steel body with six outer elements and six inner elements. Each inner element has an insert holder with five inserts that rotate to place the proper-curved insert into position to grip tubulars. The slips are moved and released by hydraulic pressure. Only seconds are needed to change an insert.
On a control panel in the driller’s cabin or doghouse, an operator selects the proper insert to grab a drill string and then simply turns a switch, automatically positioning the proper insert. The AS holds up to 500 tons and fits any 37 1/2″ rotary table. It weighs 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs) and stands 1.5 m (5 ft).
